Often fruits and vegetables were picked just hours before the farmers' market opens, and have traveled less than fruits and vegetables traveling through the conventional wholesale channel to the grocery stores. The fruit offered at farmers' markets is sweeter because it has higher sugar content because it has ripened on a tree instead of a truck/train or shelf. The California Farmers’ Markets Association is a non-profit mutual benefit corporation providing Certified Farmers’ Markets for the Bay Area since 1994. California Farmers’ Markets Association’s system of farmers' markets serves over 26,000 Bay Area households each week.
“Certified Farmers Markets” and “Certified Producers” are certified and regulated by State of California law. It is illegal for farmers to buy and re-sell agricultural products at a Certified Farmers Market. A Certified Farmers’ Market may only be operated by a local government, a certified producer or a non-profit organization. Learn more.
